Cape Town - A mother has been left devastated after her son was shot dead inside a Cape Town night spot.

The grieving mother says her 21-year-old son died doing what he loved - dancing.

Police are investigating the shooting in the Brackenfell pub in the early hours of Sunday morning that saw four people injured and Roman Claazen fatally wounded.

A bouncer working at the Kuiergat pub in Viben Street, Brackenfell, was apparently among those injured.

A young woman is also recovering in hospital after being shot in the stomach.

A source revealed the gunman opened fire inside the popular drinking spot shortly before 2am on Sunday morning.

Captain FC Van Wyk says the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still being investigated and no arrests have been made.

“The injured people – a 22-year-old female and three males aged between 19 and 39 – were taken to a nearby hospital for medical treatment,” added Van Wyk.

“A murder and attempted murder case was opened for investigation.

“The possibility that this incident can be gang-related will be investigated,” Van Wyk said.

Claazen, who worked in a pipe manufacturing factory, was the sole breadwinner in the family.

His mother says that she got a call in the early hours of Sunday morning from one of Claazen’s friends that he had been shot.

“He died on the dance floor,” says his mother Elzette Claazen, 43.

“Roman lived for dancing and he loved chatting to women, so he died doing what he loved.”

“He was never involved in gangsterism and he was an example to other youngsters in this area,” she added.

“He was a good son to me and our family. I cannot believe my only breadwinner had to die this way,” said Elzette.
