Rustenburg - Namibia has closed its schools after announcing confirmed cases of Covid-19, local media reported on Monday.
The Namibian newspaper said acting education minister Martin Andjaba announced on Sunday that all private and public schools would be closed from March 16 and re-open on April 14.
This follows an announcement by President Hage Geingob on Sunday that all public gatherings were suspended for a period of 30 days.
"The College of Arts, libraries, resource centres, museums, National Art Gallery of Namibia and National Literacy Programmes of Namibia are also closed and suspended with immediate effect," the newspaper reported.
Namibia confirmed two cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, being two tourists who tested positive for the virus after consulting a private doctor.
The ban on public gatherings will affect Namibia's 30th independence celebration planned for March 21 as well as a concert which Nigerian Afro-fusion singer and songwriter Burna Boy was expected to headline on April 4 at Windhoek's Independence Stadium.
The southern African country has reportedly run out of hand sanitisers and masks as the globally spreading coronavirus has sparked panic buying.
