A new Covid-19 variant has been detected in South Africa, just as a fourth wave of the deadly pandemic is expected to hit the country by Christmas.
According to eNCA, the Variant B.1.1.529 has been found in Botswana and Hong Kong and has an extremely high number of mutations, and might be even more infectious than the dreaded Delta variant.
At this stage, experts say they are unsure if the current Covid vaccines in SA will work against the new variant.
Earlier this week, the National Institute for Communicable Diseases reported a spike in Covid-19 cases in Gauteng, more especially in the Tshwane region.
