London - A new species of river dolphin has been found for the first time in almost 100 years.

Scientists have named the new breed Araguaia after the waters in Brazil where it was discovered.

Unlike sea dwellers, river dolphins are rare and tend to have long beaks that allow them to hunt for food in muddy riverbeds.

The closest relation to the Araguaia is the Amazon, regarded as the most intelligent of all river species.

Dr Tomas Hrbek hailed the discovery of the species, estimated to number 1 000, as “very exciting”. - Daily Mail
