Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato this week announced the site transfer for the flagship Mitchells Plain TVET college has been completed and building will commence within the next few months.
Plato said having a facility of this nature in Mitchells Plain is now needed more than ever to train young people in vital skills.
The transfer of the 6796 hectare erf was completed on Tuesday and registered to False Bay College.
The college which will be situated at 1 Birkenhead Drive in Strandfontein, is expected to cater for more than 5000 students from areas like Strandfontein, Mandalay, Grassy Park, Mitchells Plain, Philippi, Khayelitsha and Pelican Park.
“I am happy to see that this development can now enter the next phase,” said Plato.
“Having a facility within Mitchells Plain is required more than ever to train young people in vital skills to reduce poverty, inequality, to grow the economy and boost employment through scarce and critical-skills training and innovation programmes.”
He said the college will offer courses in the key sectors of tourism, film, information technology, call centre training, retail programmes, business studies, paralegal qualifications and the creative media.
It will also have a cosmetology academy, and bridging programmes for youth who do not meet the minimum requirements for entry into technical and vocational education and training colleges.
National government through the Department of Higher Education and Training made R380 million available for the establishment of the facility.
