A newborn baby has been found burnt, covered with clingwrap and cardboard.
The infant was discovered by people who were on their way home from church on Scheldt Road in Manenberg on Sunday.
The boy’s lifeless body still had the umbilical cord attached.
A witness says: “The church people were walking behind the church, when they noticed that there was a baby dumped there.
“They alerted community members who then called the police.
“Some people thought the baby was burnt in the car he was dumped next to.
“But the car had burnt out the previous night and when he was spotted, his body was burning.”
The community is now searching for the mother who abandoned her child.
“We are looking for someone who was pregnant and now doesn’t have their baby.
“Hopefully the cameras at the garage spotted the woman, as she was walking to the church side, so she could be arrested and explain why she would do such an evil thing.”
Police spokesman Captain FC van Wyk says the Manenberg police are investigating a murder case.
“The murder case was opened after the body of a newborn baby boy, with umbilical cord still attached, was found along Scheldt Road in Manenberg.
“The body was discovered by a member of the community on Sunday, December 27, at 10am.
“A post-mortem will be conducted to determine the cause of death.”
He told the Daily Voice that no one has been arrested yet.
