A group of car enthusiasts showed their love for their community by donating food parcels, party packs and goodies for children at the Holy Cross Children’s Home in Uitsig to mark Youth Day.
Faiek de Villiers, president of the Opel Cartel, said 11 car clubs from all over the Kaap had planned a fun day of activities until president Cyril Ramaphosa changed those plans on Tuesday night when he announced lockdown Level 3 as a response to the third wave of Covid infections.
“We had a whole day of stuff planned for the kids today that included breakfast, sporting events, arts and crafts but of course that could not happen so we just decided to drop off stuff at the house.
“The whole idea is to give back to the community and look after our children.”
Faiek says it is the second time that they have donated to the Holy Cross home on the corner of Del la Rey and Modderdam Road.“We started in 2019 and it was a great success. We wanted to do another event last year but of course Covid hit and now we decided that we had to go through with this year’s event even though we had to change our plans at the last minute.”
The Lost City resident said it was important for privileged youngsters to see them help those less fortunate.
“When I drive with my children and we see a guy begging, I teach them that they must not judge them but instead find ways to help.”
