A Mitchells Plain couple who lived at the Kapteinsklip squatter camp for over a year ended the month of love by tying the knot in a sweet ceremony on Saturday.
Lovebirds Miche, 27, and Julian Julies, 26, returned for one last photo shoot at their love nest before they moved into their new home in Eastridge.
Kapteinsklip, located at the train station of the same name, is home to over 280 homeless people.
Miche looked beautiful in a white satin and lace trourok while her hubby looked dashing in a black suit, purple shirt, grey bowtie and blink skoene.
The couple had been dating for a year when Julian moved to the camp in January 2020 and Miche joined him a few months later.
A proud Miche says: “My husband used to stay in Kilimanjaro Road, but then things didn't work out at his granny's house due to family problems.
“My husband used to go visit some friends at the camp and that's where he met the ‘mayor’ of the camp, Isgak and his wife Ilhaam Abrahams.
“He became close with them and then could put up his own Wendy house.
“I used to visit him there and immediately fell in love with the people and the community. I moved in a few months later.”
The couple, who share a child had their wedding reception and ceremony at Miche’s mother’s house in Eastridge and went to the Westridge Gardens for pictures.
Miche says due to lockdown, she couldn’t invite any of her friends at the camp to her wedding.
“That’s why I felt like giving them their due by taking pictures at the squatter camp. They made me who I am today,” she says.
Friend Liezle Stuurman, who lives at the camp, took the pictures.
“I’m very proud of Miche and Julian for taking this bold step. I will miss them,” said Liezle.
The couple, who are both unemployed, and their child are now staying with Miche’s mom until they find jobs to support themselves.
Miche adds: “It doesn't mean if you stay on a field that your dreams can’t come true.”
