Durban - A 25-year-old man, arrested for posing as a recruitment agent for the KZN Department of Health, is expected to appear in court this week.

Police spokesman Captain Thulani Zwane said the man approached his alleged victim on Friday, claiming he was a Health Department employee and could get her a job as a nurse, at a cost.

“It is alleged the victim met the suspect on Monday at Grey’s Hospital, where he produced a contract and offered her the job. He then requested R3 000 in cash for the job,” Zwane said.

However, the victim became suspicious and recognised she was being scammed. She alerted hospital security staff, who apprehended the suspect.

“Upon investigation with the Health Department, it was established that the contract was a false document and the suspect was arrested,” said Zwane.

A case of fraud is being investigated.

Police have warned the public to beware of any job opportunity where fraudsters request cash payments. “Government departments follow certain procedures when recruiting people. Applications are done via the human resource department. Contracts are only signed after tests and interviews are completed. No money changes hands,” Zwane said.
