Johannesburg - An off-duty police officer was stabbed to death early Thursday morning in Kagiso, on the West Rand, during a hijacking, Gauteng police said.

“Suspects escaped in the officer's vehicle, which was later recovered a few kilometres from the scene,” said Lt-Col Lungelo Dlamini.

“It is alleged that Constable Gift Mpho Boshomane, 33, stationed in Randfontein, was confronted by a number of unknown suspects while sitting in his vehicle in Kagiso Extension Two,” he said.

The attackers stabbed Boshomane and pulled him out of the car around 3am. He died on the scene.

When police recovered the car, the registration number had been removed.

“His service pistol was not taken, as it was hidden under the driver's seat. No one has been arrested,” said Dlamini.

His body was discovered by a member of the public, who contacted the police.

“Police are appealing to anyone who (may) have witnessed the incident to come forward with information,” said Dlamini. - Sapa
