Thaba Nchu - A man was killed and two other people were critically injured when two cars, one of them a police car, collided on the N8 in Thaba Nchu in the Free State late on Saturday night, paramedics said.

ER24 paramedics arrived at the scene at about midnight and found the driver of an Audi had been ejected from his car, ER24 spokeswoman Annine Siddall said.

"Unfortunately there was nothing paramedics could do to save the man's life and he was declared dead on the scene. The passenger in the Audi was in a critical condition and was transported to a nearby hospital for further medical care."

The driver of the police car sustained severe injuries and was also transported to hospital. The exact circumstances surrounding the collision were not yet known, she said.
