Pretoria - The prosecution team handling Oscar Pistorius murder case has petitioned the Supreme Court of Appeal to appeal his six-year sentence.

Gerrie Nel's application for leave to appeal the' sentence was denied in the Gauteng High Court, Joburg, last month. This left the team with no other option but to turn to the Supreme Court of Appeal (SCA).

Pistorius was sentenced to six years for the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp on Valentine's Day 2013.

Judge Thokozile Masipa initially found Pistorius guilty of culpable homicide and sentenced him to five years behind bars, before the conviction was changed to murder by the SCA.

Masipa then sentenced the former Paralympian to six years for Steenkamp's murder.
