Johannesburg – A 61-year-old woman was sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering her boyfriend, North West police said.

Police spokesperson Colonel Sabata Mokgwabone said on Wednesday that the incident occurred in July 2015 in Kanana, near Klerksdorp, after Patricia Nombuyiselo Maponya poisoned and killed her 42-year-old boyfriend, Andreas Elago Haikwuy, who was a Namibian national.

The sentence was passed down earlier this week, on Monday, by the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court.

Mokgwabone said that Maponya hid Haikwuy in the garage but was arrested after her neighbour blew the whistle.

“That was after Maponya requested the neighbour to help her remove something from her house.”

The police found the body when they searched Maponya’s property.

* Meanwhile, in another incident, a 43-year-old man was sentenced to life imprisonment on Monday at the Taung Magistrate’s Court for raping his eight-year-old stepdaughter in April 2012, in Motsweding village, near Taung.

“The accused, who was the victim’s stepfather, raped her after her mother went to the shop,” Mokgwabone said.

The girl told her mother that she had been raped on several occasions by her stepfather since 2010.
