Durban - Four men were killed in a single car crash on Phoenix Highway near the Trade Centre intersection in Phoenix, Durban on Saturday night, paramedics said.

Members of Reaction Unit South Africa were called out to the scene by passing motorists reporting the incident shortly before 9pm, Reaction Unit South Africa said in a statement on its Facebook page.

"Upon arrival paramedics established that the four Indian male occupants [of the car] had sustained life threatening injuries and died on [the] scene."

It was alleged that the gold Toyota Corolla was travelling out of Phoenix when the driver lost control and crashed into a concrete barrier in the centre of the road. The car was extensively damaged and traced to a resident of Millbury Place in Phoenix.

"Two of the deceased have been identified as brothers. Shortly after hearing of the incident the father of the brothers had to be rushed to hospital after he was suspected of suffering a heart attack."

Traffic on Phoenix Highway was diverted to allow emergency services to extricate the bodies of the men from the car, the statement said.
