Durban - KwaZulu-Natal police are searching for the attackers of a nun, known as Sister Stefani, who was found raped and killed in Ixopo, they said on Friday.

Sister Gertrud Tiefenbacher, 86, was found dead in her room at Sacred Heart Home Convent a week ago, said Major Thulani Zwane. “We are appealing to anyone with information about the whereabouts of the murder suspects to urgently contact Warrant Officer Thembelihle Hlangu on 076 828 9582.”

Zwane said people who were taken in for questioning at the time of the incident were later released.

“It is alleged that the victim was at her residence when she was approached by suspects who allegedly tied her hands with a typewriter cord. She had a towel over her face, causing the her to suffocate,” he said.

Zwane said foreign currency was allegedly taken from Tiefenbacher’s room.

Provincial police commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnya Ngobeni, has set up a task team to investigate the case.

“We condemn such brutal murder of an innocent elderly woman at Ixopo. Our detectives are following up some leads that might lead to the arrest of the suspects.” Ngobeni said
