Police investigate after woman doused in petrol dies

Johannesburg - Gauteng police are investigating a case of murder after a woman doused in flammable liquid and set alight died from her wounds. 

The incident reportedly took place in the early hours of Sunday morning in the Atteridgeville/Kwaggasrand area. 

Netcare spokesperson Nick Dollman had earlier said that paramedics were called to the scene and found the woman in a critical condition. 

"Reports from the scene allege that the victim had been doused with a flammable liquid, believed to be petrol, and then set light. 

"The woman, in her mid-thirties, had sustained severe burns and was in a critical condition requiring immediate intervention."

Gauteng provincial police spokesperson Captain Kay Makhubele confirmed the incident and that a case of murder had been opened.

"We got a report that a woman had been burnt at one of the shacks and was taken to hospital, where she later passed away," he said. 

Makhubele said it was unclear what led to her burning, as she passed away before she could give a statement, but confirmed that police were investigating. 

He confirmed that a case of murder had been opened and that no arrests had been made.
