Johannesburg -

An investigation into cellphone footage of a man being stoned to death is underway, Eastern Cape police said on Sunday.

“The footage is coming from an individual's cellphone of an incident that could have happened anywhere in South Africa,” Captain Stanley Jarvis said.

“… The footage is currently being studied to ascertain where it happened and the individuals that are involved and identified on the footage, so that we can see if cases have been reported in that specific precinct.”

Jarvis said the video had nothing to do with the protests in Port Elizabeth earlier this week or the killing of a Somalian man on Thursday.

The video of the attack was aired on eNCA on Friday.

The footage showed a man lying naked in the road. It appeared he had already been beaten.

Another man picked up a cement block and threw it on him while the crowd cheered in the background.

From the side, a boy in school uniform was seen running and jumping on the beaten man. Another boy threw a rock at his genitals.

The two boys then stamped on the man who tried to protect his head, which was repeatedly kicked.

The final blow came when another young boy picked up a rock from the man's chest and smashed it onto his head.

It was not clear whether the man died on the scene.
