Johannesburg - Police on Thursday confirmed they were investigating a case of murder after a Soweto man was gunned down at his home.

The incident reportedly happened in Protea Glen on Wednesday night, police and paramedics said.

According to Protea Glen police spokesperson Sergeant Vincent Mashiteng, three armed men broke into the house and found the man's wife and child in the sitting room watching TV.

"They then tied both of them up before ransacking the house. The men then moved on to the study room, where the man was, and fatally shot him," he said.

The suspects then made off with valuables from the house, leaving the woman and child unharmed.

Paramedics were also called to the scene, with Netcare spokesperson confirming that documentation relating to the 38-year-old man's death was completed and handed over to authorities at the scene.

Mashiteng confirmed that a case of murder and house robbery has been opened and investigations are underway.
