Durban - The ANC's mistakes had far been exceeded by the good it had achieved during the past 20 years in government, the party's deputy president Cyril Ramaphosa said on Friday.

Speaking in Durban, Ramaphosa said: “Mistakes have been made, but at the same time we have had great success.”

He said the party's record had meant its membership had grown to 1.2 million people.

“We have a good story to tell,” he told a meeting in Durban's southern Amanzimtoti suburb to welcome new ANC members.

He said the government was investing in the country's economy and urged the private sector to do the same.

“The private sector plays a critical role.”

The failure of public sector institutions such as Eskom to invest in the economy during the first years of ANC rule had hampered growth, but these institutions were now investing.

The government was aiming to ensure that 70 percent of what it would procure would be locally produced, said Ramaphosa. - Sapa
