Cape Town - The ANC in the Cape Town council is digging in its heels over what it calls the “Aurecon scandal”, saying it will continue to put pressure on the DA for the outcome of an investigation into the Athlone power station contract.
In August the ANC leadership in the city levelled allegations of corruption over the R9.7 million contract awarded to Aurecon for the decommissioning of the Athlone power station.
The opposition claimed Aurecon had an advantage as it had carried out the feasibility study and the work plan for the decommissioning.
ANC councillor Bheki Hadebe asked if the process was competitive if the same company was “the referee and player”.
Mayor Patricia de Lille immediately launched an investigation, by accounting firm Ernst & Young.
Yesterday De Lille told the council Aurecon’s lawyers had asked for information about the tender and investigation. She said the city had begun a formal disciplinary process for employees implicated
