The ANC is to probe the unenclosed toilets in the Free State, vowing to take “strong action” against those found guilty, treasurer general Mathews Phosa said on Tuesday.

“No one has a right to subject our people to such dehumanising conditions in the name of the ANC,” Phosa told a media briefing in Johannesburg.

This was after it emerged that there were over 1 600 unenclosed toilets in the Moqhaka municipality in the Free State. The ANC Youth League recently took the Democratic Alliance to court for leaving toilets in Makhaza, on the Cape Flats, unenclosed.

The ANC again claimed it did not know about the situation initially, spokesman Jackson Mthembu said.

“We also went on to say if indeed that is true, that is inhumane.”

Phosa added that open toilets violated human rights and “unlike the DA” the ANC would not wait for a court or the Human Rights Commission for it to take action. Three hundred toilets had been enclosed so far and the ANC would ensure the remaining toilets were seen to “without delay”. - Sapa
