Johannesburg - The ANC Youth League on Friday welcomed President Jacob Zuma's State of the Nation address.

“The youth league draws confidence and reassurance from the president's address that we have done well as a country to erode the dark legacy of apartheid,” spokesman Bandile Masuku said in a statement.

Government had played a role in rolling back the frontiers of poverty and underdevelopment.

The league commended government for the progress it had made in education in the past five years.

“The strides made in this regard are commendable, with the post-schooling environment rapidly diversifying as more young people are absorbed in colleges and universities.”

He said the increase in the National Students Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) allocation from R3.8 billion in 2009 to R9bn in 2014 deserved to be applauded.”

There was still more that needed to be done to ensure free education for all, Masuku said.

The league was happy with the state's intervention in the economy through strategic public spending in infrastructure projects and social welfare.

“We will continue engaging the ANC and its government on the need to pursue a much more radical project of economic restructuring.”
