Pretoria - The Seriti Commission of Inquiry into the 1999 arms deal resumed its hearings in Pretoria on Monday, with two witnesses giving evidence.

The first witness to testify was Paul Jourdan, the trade and industry department's former deputy director general for special projects, spokesman William Baloyi said in a statement.

His evidence was led by Barry Skinner.

The next witness to give evidence was the department's former director general Zavareh Rustomjee, whose evidence was led by Tayob Aboobaker.

“The legal representatives from Armscor requested to cross-examine Zavareh Rustomjee and the chairperson (Judge Willie Seriti) granted (their request),” said Baloyi.

“They, however, requested more time to study his (Rustomjee's) testimony and to prepare.”

The proceedings were adjourned to Tuesday morning.

They were attended by seven witnesses linked to the trade and industry department, including its director general Lionel October, said Baloyi.

The commission is investigating allegations of corruption in the multi-billion-rand arms deal.
