Johannesburg - The DA in Gauteng wants the MEC for local government and housing, Ntombi Mekgwe, to probe the sale of government land allegedly by her predecessor Humphrey Mmemezi and the Mogale City Municipality.
The DA’s call for a full inquiry came after Mmemezi, then an MEC, told the Gauteng legislature in June last year that Dan Mashitisho’s appointment as Mogale City’s municipal manager was invalid.
Mmemezi was reacting to a question by the DA’s Mike Moriarty after it emerged that Mashitisho had not been appointed by a full council sitting.
Mmemezi admitted last year that it was irregular for Mogale City mayor Calvin Seerane to do the unilateral appointment instead of his council.
He promised to reverse the appointment, but quit his post in July after he was exposed for having damaged state vehicles and misusing his official state-issued credit card.
Now the DA wants the provincial legislature to follow up on The Star’s latest revelation that Mashitisho had used a “special power of attorney” document that Mmemezi appeared to have signed to sell two pieces of land in Kagiso to a private property developer for R20 million in May last year.
DA spokesman on local government and housing Fred Nel said his party wanted Mekgwe to shed light on whether the land sale was legitimate.
