The Democratic Alliance is growing and making inroads to unseat the ANC, parliamentary leader Lindiwe Mazibuko said on Thursday.
“We are very upbeat and we are growing significantly in this election,” Mazibuko told Sapa at the IEC national results operations centre in Pretoria.
“There were provinces where we were third but now we are going to be the official opposition.”
She said the growth was an indication that change was coming and that people were starting to support opposition parties.
Mazibuko weighed in on the hotly contested province of Gauteng. She said the party would do well in the province once all the stations had submitted their results.
“We will do very well once the results for Tshwane and Johannesburg are received. We had a very good premier candidate in Mmusi Maimane,” she said.
Mazibuko was excited about the lead the party had in the Western Cape, the only province not governed by the African National Congress.
The DA was leading the province with 57 percent.
“The 60 percent is an endorsement of what we are doing (in the province). Now we are going to look at consolidating that by winning more metros in the local election,” she said.
In 2009, 989 132 people voted for the DA. The DA had surpassed that number this year with only half of the votes having been counted so far.
Party leader Helen Zille said she was confident the DA would do better than during the last election.
