Johannesburg -The Democratic Alliance said on Thursday it was puzzled as to why South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) chief executive Busisiwe Memela-Khambula earned almost R1 million more per annum than her predecessors.

In a statement, DA member of parliament and shadow minister for social development Bridget Masango said the information came to light in a written response from social development minister Lindiwe Zulu to a question lodged in the legislature.

"The reply revealed that Memela-Khambula, who was appointed in May 2019, receives an annual salary of R2.65 million," Masango said.

"This is almost R1 million more than the former acting Sassa CEO, Abraham Mahlangu, who earned more than R1.6 million per annum."

She said the DA planned to submit further parliamentary questions around the issue, nothing that finance minister Tito Mboweni had in his budget speech last month called for an end to excessive public servant salaries.
