The DA wants struggle hero Mamphela Ramphele to join the party and possibly succeed Helen Zille as its leader, media reported on Sunday.

Zille had been asking Ramphele “for years” to join the DA, City Press and Rapport reported.

“Obviously we'd really like to have her in the party. There are things we see eye to eye on. She now has this message of active citizenry and this resonates with us,” City Press reported a DA source as saying.

Zille declined to comment but DA federal chairman James Selfe said he knew nothing about overtures to Ramphele.

Ramphele told the City Press she had never, in her 42 years as an active citizen, joined a political party.

She said she saw herself as a change agent for appropriate transformation. - Sapa
