Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance on Thursday welcomed the suspension of the Gauteng economic development department's head, Khulu Radebe.

“Last year the DA raised the red flag over the department's failure to place 10,000 youth in jobs due to budgetary constraints and delays in setting up the programme management office,” DA MPL Jack Bloom said on Thursday.

“The department also failed to spend R23.3 million in key economic development programmes.”

Gauteng premier Nomvula Mokonyane announced Radebe's suspension on Thursday.

“ 1/8Khulu 3/8 Radebe is suspended for non-performance and lack of accountability on some of the key youth development programmes,” her office said in a statement.

Mokonyane said several youth employment projects and entrepreneurship development programmes had collapsed.

She vowed to continue to hold government officials accountable and act decisively against under- or non-performance. - Sapa
