DA wins by-elections

Johannesburg - The Democratic Alliance has won two of three municipal by-elections that took place on Wednesday, the Independent Electoral Commission said on Thursday.

The other seat went to the African National Congress.

More than 22,000 people had registered to cast their votes in the three wards.

One by-election took place in KwaZulu-Natal. John Neville Lewis of the DA was voted as the new councillor in Ward 5 in uMngeni municipality. The seat was retained by the party.

Two by-elections took place in the Western Cape.

The new councillor was Johanna Martlow of the DA in Ward 22 in the City of Cape Town. The seat was retained by the party.

In the other by-election in the Western Cape, Piet Waterboer of the ANC won Ward 10 in Witzenberg municipality.

This seat was previously held by the Democratic Alliance. - Sapa
