Cape Town - He is the province’s youngest member of the Western Cape provincial legislature, but judging from his motto, Daylin Mitchell might turn out to be a heavy hitter on issues plaguing the youth across the province.

At 29, Mitchell – the DA’s youngest member of the provincial parliament – insists that he has life experience, insight and common touch to effectively be the voice of the youth in the province.

Mitchell, from Beaufort West, was sworn in by Speaker Sharna Fernandez last week.

He will fill the slot left vacant by DA stalwart, Theuns Botha when he resigned from public life earlier this year.

“I am humbled to be the youngest member ever to be sworn into the Western Cape provincial parliament, I realise with that comes great responsibilities,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell said he will zoom in on the social ills facing young people in the province and help shift the focus in the legislature to youth development: “I know the hardships plaguing the youth, having lived in both an urban and rural community where opportunities are limited and social ills are prevalent,” he added.

And his motto: Working towards creating a society in which the youth, regardless of their background can have the opportunity to achieve and become whatever they wish, if they are willing to work hard.

“I am a proud product of the open opportunity society in action,” he added.
