Johannesburg - The Economic Freedom Fighters and trade union Amcu are working together to destabilise the country and the ANC government, ANC deputy secretary general Jessie Duarte said on Wednesday.

“Amcu and the formation of EFF show similar characteristics. The platinum belt has become counter-revolutionary. They are working together to destabilise the ANC government and the country,” Duarte told delegates at the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) central executive committee meeting in Johannesburg.

She said NUM should ask itself why its membership had shrunk.

“Workers who joined Numsa or Amcu may have been dissatisfied with NUM's service... but ask yourself why the members left our movement for untested forces. Ask and answer these questions.”

The ruling party was aware of the decrease in votes for the ANC in the May general elections.

“We went down in terms of votes because we took our support base for granted. We did not expect to lose votes to the EFF in Langa and Khayelitsha in the Western Cape,” she said.

The ruling party has had meetings with Cosatu-affiliated unions, except Numsa.

“We are pushing to meet with Numsa and another union. We will soon submit a report to the Cosatu central executive committee.

“True trade unionists want a united Cosatu, not a splintered one,” Duarte said.
