Johannesburg - The Economic Freedom Fighters on Wednesday welcomed a decision by trade union federation Nactu to support it in this year's general elections.

“The decision of Nactu... is a sign that there is hope for working class unity and action in South Africa,” spokesman Mbuyiseni Ndlozi said in a statement.

“There is indeed hope for proper workers' representation, than careerist practices noticed in other unions and federations.”

Earlier this week, the National Council of Trade Unions (Nactu) announced it would back the EFF and Pan Africanist Congress in the May 7 election.

Nactu had invited political parties to present their 2014

manifestos to the federation's central committee on March 18, general secretary Narius Moloto said in a statement.

The parties which attended were the Azanian People's Organisation, the PAC, the United Democratic Movement and the EFF.

Nactu held a central committee meeting on Sunday in Johannesburg where the decision to support the two parties was taken.

It urged all its members and affiliates, which included Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union, to participate and campaign for the two parties.

Ndlozi said the EFF would welcome Nactu members who wanted to volunteer for the party.

“The EFF will continue to engage with Nactu and all other progressive unions with the sole aim of consolidating working class unity in South Africa.

“We are indeed inspired and will never retreat nor surrender in the struggle for the emancipation of the working class,” he said. - Sapa
