Duduza, East Rand - President Jacob Zuma on Friday told residents of Duduza on the East Rand that he was humbled by the support residents showed for the ruling party and urged them to vote on May 7.
“We have seen that you are with us. A lot of the people we visited told us that they will die with the ANC,” he said, as he did a pre-election walkabout in the township.
“It made me emotional. It showed us that people love the ANC.”
Zuma told supporters opposition parties represented the needs and interests of the minority but the ANC represented the majority of South Africans.
The president said he had visited elderly residents of Duduza who assured him that they would support the African National Congress until the day they died.
He reminded people of the role the party played during the fight against apartheid.
“We got freedom and we were tasked with redressing what the apartheid government did and we are still doing that,” he said.
“On May 7, we need to go out and vote. You must help those who can't get to the voting stations because we need all the votes.”
Zuma thanked those who had come to see him in the scorching heat, saying they had given him cause to visit them after the elections.
