Johannesburg - Mayihlome Tshwete has been appointed spokesman for the department of home affairs.

Tshwete would assume his duties on Monday, the department said.

He was Home Affairs Minister Malusi Gigaba's spokesman when he was public enterprises minister.

When Gigaba was appointed home affairs minister after the May 2014 elections, Tshwete remained at the public enterprises department now headed by Lynne Brown.

Tshwete, who is the son of the late former safety and security minister Steve Tshwete and current Deputy Water and Sanitation Minister Pam Tshwete, started working as Gigaba's spokesman in 2010.
