Durban - Nkaaaandla, Nkaaaandla, Nkaaaandla is a hit… a musical one.

President Jacob Zuma is largely known for his singing and dancing prowess at ANC rallies, but when he took a swipe at opposition MPs in Parliament in May at the way they pronounced Nkandla - little did he know it would become a musical hit.

The song, aptly titled The Nkandla Song, played on Xolani Gwala’s Afternoon Drive show on Radio 702 recently, was apparently sent in to the station by an unknown producer.

He commented, “It is awesome”, “it is fantastic” and “that’s one of the best I’ve heard” after playing the song.

The parody was fused with Zuma’s May 27 parliamentary rant against opposition MPs. He had been giving a reply on the debate of the budget vote for the Presidency.

“You know some people who could not pronounce Nkandla have now learnt: Nkaaaandla, Nkaaandla, Nkaaandla,” he said at the time, mocking MPs.

The two-minute song is fused with new age beats. It echoes Zuma’s giggle as he mocks MPs with his “he he he” laughs and prominently features the use of “Nkaaaandla”.

Zuma’s now famous Zulu clapbacks, Thixo wase George Goch! (Lord of George Goch - reference to a Gauteng hostel) and Maye Babo (a Zulu phrase used to protest against a big problem) also featured.

By Sunday night, the song had been played more than 33 000 times on Radio 702’s Sound Cloud page.

Hundreds took to social media to share their comments. While many said they loved the song, some felt that it was not a matter to joke about.

Facebooker Sello Malatji declared it a hit: “Please take a listen… It’s a hit!”

On Twitter, Pagiel Chimudzi, @PagielC remarked: “I must say uPresident Zuma is talented!”

Nicole Rebelo thought it was brilliant: “Hahahahahaha it shows how South Africans in these sad and stressful times can still see the humour in everything. Brilliant song!”

Ntombi L Keller said: “Nice song indeed, (but) pay back the money.”

Teb Matsimela jokingly suggested the president would demand royalties. “The producer must be from George Goch and JZ will (be) knocking on his door next he goes there and this time it will be for royalties.”

Amanda Luvela quipped: “He he he Nkaaandla, it has to be song of the year because it will be playing in our minds for a long time”.

Justin Goodman was not amused. “If it wasn’t such a sad serious situation it would be funny!”
