Pretoria - The Patriotic Alliance has urged voters to stop electing leaders based on personalities and rather focus on policies.
“We must shy away from politics of personalities, insults, and concentrate on politics of policies,” party secretary Kenny Kunene told Sapa at the IEC national results centre in Pretoria on Thursday.
“Some people base their votes on anger.”
Kunene said it was vital for young people to get involved in politics and contribute to shaping the country.
He was happy with his party's progress in the election as the plan was never to actively contest, but rather to test the water.
“For us it was never about these elections. They were just a stepping stone to grow the party. Our plan is to contest the next municipal elections and plan for 2019,” he said.
The party was focused on making a strong challenge in the Western Cape, the province in which they received the most votes.
Out of the 10,930 national votes for the PA that had come in at 3.40pm, 8368 were from the Western Cape.
He gave credit to his staff for the work they did during campaigning, and said the leadership would discuss the way forward following the release of the final results.
