Pietermaritzburg - Cosatu leaders have to declare their business interests and those of their immediate families, the union federation in KwaZulu-Natal resolved on Tuesday.

“We are doing so (so) that we will be able to protect our leaders when they come under attack for failing to declare interests; it is not that we are against people engaged in business activities,” re-elected provincial secretary Zet Luzipo said.

This was one of the resolutions taken at the end of a three-day provincial conference in Pietermaritzburg.

Delegates called for all forensic reports to be made public and for individuals accused of misconduct to face the full might of the law.

“There should be no promotion or protection of individuals who have been implicated,” Luzipo said.

The conference reiterated its opposition to the youth wage subsidy and labour brokers, calling for an outright ban of the practice.

It called on all affiliates to ensure there were more women representatives in the rank and file of Cosatu. In the only change to the leadership, Beauty Zibula was elected Cosatu KwaZulu-Natal's chairwoman.

The positions of deputy chairman John Dlamini, provincial secretary Zet Luzipo and treasurer Cynthia Joyce were not contested.

Zibula, from the SA Clothing, Textile and Allied Workers' Union, replaced Basil Cele.

Delivering the closing remarks, Zibula called for unity among workers and affiliated unions to protect workers’ interests.

“As elected office bearers we have no individual mandate but that of all of you as workers, and we will be able to win if we are united,” she said.

The provincial leadership would now start preparing for Cosatu's national conference in September. - Sapa
