KZN legislature to feature many new faces

The outcome of the 2009 elections has left some KwaZulu-Natal politicians contemplating their future after having failed to make it back to the provincial legislature.

Some parties, including the United Democratic Movement and the National Democratic Convention (Nadeco), failed to secure any seats in the provincial legislature.

Also badly affected by a decline in its electoral showing was the IFP, which saw its 30 seats reduced to just 18.

This means that some long-serving MPLs - including Busi Mohlaka, Khayelihle Mathaba, Sipho Mbatha, Eddie Coleman, Kamal Panday, Mziwamandla Mzobe and Wiseman Mcoyi - could lose their seats.

The ANC, which increased its seats from 38 in 2004 to 51 in 2009, will feature more than 16 new members.

The DA returns to the house with seven seats, the number it won in the 2004 elections, but without veteran politician Roger Burrows, who has retired.

Burrows will be replaced as the leader of the DA caucus by John Steenhuisen.

The MF retained its two seats and will be represented by Amichand Rajbansi and his wife, Shameen Thakur-Rajbansi.

The fledgling Cope and the ACDP secured a seat each.

The first sitting of the new legislature takes place on May 6 when the new speaker, deputy speaker and premier will be elected and all members sworn in.

The new premier will be inaugurated on May 11.
