Cabinet ministers will this morning brief the media on the details of government's interventions after President Cyril Ramaphosa declared a national state of disaster in terms of the Disaster Management Act.

South Africa is now dealing with the internal transmission of Covid-19, and the number of people infected with the virus is expected to rise in the coming days and weeks.

It is a medical emergency “far graver than what we have experienced in over a century”, President Cyril Ramaphosa said last night.

“Given the scale and the speed at which the virus is spreading, it is now clear that no country is immune from the disease, nor will they be spared its severe impact.

“Never before in the history of our democracy has our country been confronted with such a severe situation.
