Johannesburg - EFF leader Julius Malema says he is confident the party has managed to convince former president Thabo Mbeki to vote for them.

Malema and the rest of the EFF leadership met with Mbeki on Monday afternoon to canvass his vote in the local government elections on Wednesday.

According to Malema, Mbeki's response what that his vote is his secret, which for them was a positive response.

"What makes us more happy is that we were received not at some offices but at his home,” Malema said.

"I saw some mayoral candidate went to foundation offices, so we don't do offices, door-to-door is at homes not offices," said Malema.

Mbeki's spokesman Mukoni Ratshitanga said there was nothing controversial about the meeting as the former president was open to meeting anybody regardless of political affiliation.

Mbeki has reportedly refused to campaign for the ANC.
