Port Elizabeth - Mhlontlo municipality, in the Eastern Cape, should suspend a senior official pending disciplinary proceedings against him for alleged fraud, local government MEC Mlibo Qoboshiyane said on Thursday.

The municipality had asked Qoboshiyane to investigate the appointment of Themba Spampoel as its deputy director of supply chain management on November 1.

“Allegations on the recruitment of the incumbent official are serious and undermine the basis on which public administration is founded,” Qoboshiyane said in a statement.

“The report further implicates the municipality's CFO. It is therefore necessary for the municipality to act swiftly in instituting disciplinary processes.”

The investigation found that Spampoel did not meet the necessary requirements for the job and had presented a fraudulent payslip. Spampoel's original personnel file could also not be found.

Investigators recommended that allegations that it was stolen during a break-in should be reported to the police. - Sapa
