Cape Town – Former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko on Wednesday said he was excited to take up his new role as Public Works Minister.

Nhleko's office released a statement after he met with his predecessor Thulas Nxesi, who was moved to the sports ministry following last week's cabinet reshuffle, deputy minister Jeremy Cronin, and department of public works senior staffers.

"The President has given me the responsibility to lead the Ministry of Public Works, and as I have done before, I will do the job at hand as best as I can in the service of the citizens of South Africa under the leadership of the ANC Government," Nhleko was quoted as saying.

Nhleko's office said it was too early for Nhleko to make policy statements in his new portfolio. "He will unveil his vision for the ministry of public works during his budget vote on 16 May 2017."
