Parliament - Parliament's ad hoc committee on the Nkandla controversy is seeking an extension of its deadline to submit a report to the National Assembly, committee chairman Cedric Frolick said on Thursday.
“We are in consultations,” he told Sapa.
The deadline was October 24 but it became apparent last week that it was unlikely that the committee would be able to meet it after two advisors drafting a preliminary report told MPs they needed more time.
Frolick said the committee would meet again as soon as they had finalised a draft.
He would not comment on suggestions that the committee, which consists only of ANC MPs after opposition parties withdrew, was considering calling witnesses for questioning.
The opposition walked out of the process in protest last month after the ruling party rejected their call for President Jacob Zuma to be summonsed to answer questions and made to heed Public Protector Thuli Madonsela's order that he reimburse the state a portion of the R246 million spent on his private homestead in Nkandla, KwaZulu-Natal.
In their absence, the ANC rejected Madonsela's finding that Zuma derived undue benefit from the so-called security upgrades to his rural home that finally included a swimming pool and cattle kraal, among others, and concluded that it would be “absurd” to ask him to repay any money.
