The National Youth Development Agency has rejected reports of staff accusing their chairman of keeping money for himself.

“In our view this is nothing more than the creativity of the reporters who wrote the story,” NYDA branch secretary Goodenough Nethengwe said in a statement.

“We urge the media to refrain from sensational reporting...”

The Times newspaper reported on Thursday that angry NYDA staff had accused executive chairman Andile Lungisa of lining his own pockets.

Nethengwe said staff went on strike on Monday and protested outside the agency's Midrand offices against being given an 8.33

percent performance bonus.

“The issues have since been resolved and staff have subsequently been paid and they returned to their workstations,” he said.

The Democratic Alliance youth urged the agency to reassess its staffing structure.

DA youth leader Makashule Gana said that when the NYDA was formed the staff from its predecessor organisations were simply incorporated.

“No thought was given to how the new structure would operate and without new employment contracts being signed.”

He said that to ensure the rollout of youth development programmes was not jeopardised, internal staffing structures should be done.

“Superfluous positions that are not aligned with the outcomes of NYDA need to be removed.” - Sapa
