Cape Town - Parliament has adopted the report on the expropriation of land without compensation after the ANC’s majority ensured the report got the nod from MPs.
A total of 209 MPs voted in favour of the expropriation of land without compensation and 91 MPs voted against the report.
But other opposition parties on Tuesday rejected the report and warned that this was setting South Africa on a dangerous path.
The DA, Freedom Front Plus, African Christian Democratic Party and Cope said approving the report to allow for the expropriation of land without compensation would harm the economy and chase away investors.
The EFF said the land question had to be resolved and it was time to do so.
ANC MP Madipoane Mothapo said the government must now fast-track the process for the expropriation of land without compensation.
“The land question has been a pillar in our struggle in the ANC,” said Mothapo.
EFF leader Julius Malema said the argument by other opposition parties on the written submissions was flawed.
This was after the DA, FF Plus, Cope and ACDP said thousands of written submissions were never considered by the Constitutional Review Committee.
However, the ANC and EFF said the report had nothing to do with numbers, but this was part of the public participation process.
They said the report was a reflection of the views expressed by people across the country during the public hearings.
