When the 54th African National Congress eventually got underway at the Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg delegates made their choice of candidates for the ANC's top job abundantly clear by singing songs in support of their choices.
After prayers by various religious leaders, President Zuma opened the conference by delivering his final organisational report as the president of the ANC.

While the opening session was underway, many delegates were still battling with accreditation, which could delay the proceedings even more.
