Johannesburg - ANC Youth League national co-ordinator Magasela Mzobe has emerged as the front-runner for the position of president of the league, ahead of its national conference in September.

Mzobe is co-ordinator of the national task team, appointed after the disbandment of the league. His supporters are said to be lobbying branches to back his candidacy.

There is also a strong lobby for Mzobe to run with former Sasco president Mawethu Rune as secretary-general of the league.

Mzobe has been criticised – as part of the task team – for the manner in which the youth league’s provincial and regional structures were disbanded.

“We cannot have a situation where the task team uses the resources of the organisation to secure positions for their preferred people,” said one Tshwane region chairperson.

However, some other promising candidates have emerged, including former deputy president of the ANCYL, Ronald Lamola of Mpumalanga.
