SA soldier in DRC shoots himself after allegedly killing girlfriend

Ppretoria - A member of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) based in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) tried to kill himself after he allegedly shot his girlfriend, also a member of the SANDF based in the DRC, the SANDF said on Saturday.

His alleged girlfriend died on arrival at the hospital in Goma after the shooting at about 8.45pm South African time on Friday. The man was in a critical condition in hospital in Goma. The motive behind the shooting was not yet known, Brig-Gen Mafi Mgobozi said.

The name of the deceased would be released once the next-of-kin had been formally informed.

Defence and Military Veterans Minister Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula, Defence Secretary Sam Gulube, and SANDF chief Lt-Gen Solly Shoke expressed their heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and loved ones of the deceased member, Mgobozi said.
