Johannesburg - The constitution of the SA Local Government Association (Salga) will be amended at its national conference, the organisation said on Monday.
“This is to ensure that the legitimacy of Salga as the sole representative of local government not be questioned and to assert the voice of local government,” its acting chief executive Lance Joel said in a statement.
The amendments sought to change the rules governing membership requirements and improve the representation and legitimacy of Salga.
In August last year, Salga's national conference resolved that amendments to its constitution be considered at a special national conference.
This conference would be held in Gauteng next week, according to a document on the Salga website.
Joel said amendments to sections including those on the role and mandate of Salga, and the internal code of conduct would be considered.
The composition and role of both Salga's national executive committee and provincial executive committee would also be reconsidered.
According to Salga's constitution, it can only be amended if two thirds of the delegates at a national conference agree to the changes.
“The proposed amendments will considerably increase the composition of the political leadership of Salga as well as improve the representation, legitimacy, discipline and rules of procedure of Salga,” Joel said. - Sapa
