Johannesburg - The Economic Freedom Fighters are in for a rough time.

Not only has their leader been slapped with a R14 million Sars bill, but some EFF members are also taking the party to task for “treating them like condoms”.

According to court papers filed in the North Gauteng High Court, the South African Revenue Service (Sars) has launched an application for Malema’s final sequestration. It has also accused the EFF leader of lying about his source of income.

Malema had apparently tried to dodge paying donation tax and had received money from questionable sources to settle the R18m tax bill, which was reduced to R7.2m in a deal in May last year.

If the court grants the final order, Malema will lose his Member of Parliament position, the Sunday Times reported.

In August last year, Malema denied allegations that cigarette smuggler Adriano Mazzotti was helping him pay his bill.

Meanwhile, about 20 EFF members accused the party of violating the rights of its workers.

They say in the nine months since the EFF was elected to parly, the party has laid off workers giving them only a week’s notice, failed to register workers, did not pay their unemployment contributions, and failed to hand Pay As You Earn (PAYE) tax deductions to Sars.

Staff from various provinces have taken their cases to the department of labour.

The EFF insisted the members were volunteers and not entitled to the same rights as employees.

Mpumalanga field worker Caleb Sibitane said: “They treated us as if we are a condom that has been used. Now we are not wanted.”
